On Saturday, Israel began its massive bombardment against 1.5 million Palestinians besieged in the occupied Gaza Strip. As you read this, almost 400 people have been killed and 1,800 injured, the vast majority civilians. The attacks against neighborhoods, universities, mosques, police stations, fishing ports and media organizations continue as world governments remain silent and complicit.
Since the attack started, tens of thousands of people from almost every country have turned to The Electronic Intifada (EI) — about ten times our normal number of visitors.
They have come to find factual news and analysis. They have come for eyewitness accounts from people in Gaza whose voices are silenced and whose lives — and deaths — are rendered invisible by mainstream media coverage that is often indistinguishable from Israeli government propaganda.
All over the world people are protesting and mobilizing to oppose Israel’s war crimes in Gaza. They are using EI to educate friends, neighbors, journalists and fellow activists. We have fielded calls from media organizations all over the world, seeking information or contacts so they can tell the story better.
Though the EI team has been working around the clock, we want to assure you that nothing — nothing — will make us stop.
Early in December, as we do every year, we launched our annual appeal to ensure we have the means to continue our independent reporting and educational work through 2009. As an independent publication we have always relied on the financial support of our readers.
